Tesfaye

Rachel Judd is a 15 year old girl who lives here in Salt Lake. She has decided that she is wants to help the women of Ethiopia. She makes darling wraps/shawls. They are adorable and so fun to wear, people will definitely stop you on the street to ask you where you got it. Where you got it is here at KUDU. They are so great and unlike most wrap/shawls, they stay on without all the tugging and pulling!! There are some great leather ties and small beaded detail that are just the right touch. See one below.

This is Rachel's cute mom modeling for us.

Here is how Rachel got started.

"Tesfaye was born when the designer and creator, Rachel Judd, first saw the touching documentary  “A Walk to Beautiful “ highlighting the lives of women struggling with obstetric fistulas. Although this condition is rarely heard of, she was inspired to do something about it. That’s when our shawl came along.
Whenever a surgery is completed at the Addis Ababa fistula hospital in Ethiopia, new clothing is provided to the women as a representation of their “new life” usually, in the form of a blanket-like shawl. So with this, Rachel combined her love of fashion with her love of people and created Tesfaye - - hope. Hope that comes with a guarantee that, with each purchase, profits will be sent directly to the hospital to pay for the surgery of one woman and the new life they can lead, thanks to you."

Horn

These bowls are made of horn. They are from animals that have been culled. There is no poaching or anything illegal with any of our animal products. These animals live a better life than most of the people in Africa, it is unfortunate but true. These are a unique bowl with great color variations, a perfect accent in any home.

The spoons only add to the great appeal of these beautiful bowls.

These are salad servers are an elegant gift for you friends of family. Masculine enough for a man who likes to entertain or even cook, if there is such a thing. :)

For more great ideas for the holiday season, please come see us and help the Africans while you're at it.

Wooden Bowls

We have these adorable little wooden bowls in the shop right now. They are so unique because every piece of wood is different. The black and white detailing adds so much to these little bowls. We have lots of different styles and sizes. The Africans use them for salt and pepper and they also use little spoons to sprinkle it on their food. They are also great for sugar for you coffee or they make a great jewelry dish by your sink or on your dresser.
Really the possibilities for these bowls are endless and what a great gift for the holidays.

They are really a fun entertaining set as well. It's a different set that not all of your friends will have.
Underneath these bowls is a bamboo and cotton table runner. They add so much to a holiday tablescape. We also have purple and red ones, perfect for this time of year. Prices for bowls start at $13.00.

Just Sold!

We just sold two paintings by Tess Lovemore. They were so great, the Elephant and Samuel. We will hopefully be getting two paintings to replace them. Tess is a South African and a close family friend of my sister-in-law's family. She does great work. We have more paintings by her here at KUDU if you like these two. The others are landscapes. Come in and check them out.

The Very First!

Our very first post has to be about our newest member here at Kudu. His name is Matteo. He is the cutest little dude ever.

Matteo is a Portuguese Waterdog. Yes, like the Obama dog but ours is cuter. He is a fiesty little guy getting adjusted to a new home and new rules. If we look a little tired here at Kudu, its because we are, very tired. He is keeping us up all night. Kleis has been doing most of the work, as he is her dog, but Lauren has helped share in the duties.
Right now Matteo is typically in the store on Saturdays but come holiday season, he will be here much more. So come stop by and see what African Art is all about and meet Matteo.
